Free winter fishing this weekend!
LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Michael D. MacDonald is reminding Macomb County residents that Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17, mark the first of two free fishing weekends in Michigan this year. The summer weekend is scheduled for June 8-9.
“Twice a year, Michigan offers a weekend for people to get out and experience our state’s tremendous fishing opportunities — completely free,” said MacDonald, R-Macomb Township. “Fishing has long been one of Michigan’s premier outdoor activities and an important part of our heritage. The free fishing weekend offers a chance for families to pass down the love of fishing to the next generation.”
During the weekend, all fishing license fees will be waived and vehicles will be able to enter state parks and use boating sites without a recreation passport.
Residents and visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland lakes and the Great Lakes for all species of fish, but all fishing regulations still apply.

The website also includes a link to information about ice fishing in the “Learn to Fish” section. An “Ice Fishing Basics” article features good safety advice and basics on getting started and commonly used equipment.
“Ice fishing can be dangerous for those who don’t follow safety procedures or who venture out on the ice unprepared, so please remember that having fun starts with being safe,” MacDonald said.
